Admission & Registration
Are there any prerequisites for enrolling in the TEFL Certificate program?
Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent. Proficiency in English is also required, as the program is conducted in English. Prior teaching experience is not required but is beneficial.
When are the registration deadlines?
Registration typically closes two weeks before the start of each term. For specific dates, please see the “Upcoming Dates section above.
Early regstration is recommended to secure a spot and allow sufficient time to review pre-course materials. Late registrations may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, depending on availability.
How long will it take for me to hear back about program admission?
Since registration for the program is open for two weeks at a time, you will hear back from our team within this time frame.
Course Details
What is the duration of the TEFL Certificate program?
This self-paced fully online course runs for 2 (Summer) or 14 weeks (Fall & Spring) at a time.
Is this a for-credit course?
No, this course does not offer academic credit.
What is the difference between this course and the TESOL course offered by FIU?
This TEFL course focuses on practical teaching strategies and skills tailored for teaching English abroad or in diverse classroom settings. FIU’s TESOL course may include more theorteical and academic components and is often geared toward those pursuing higher education credentials in TESOL.
What are the course objectives?
This course is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively teach English as a foreign language. Key objectives include understanding teaching methodologies, classroom management, assessment strategies, and cultural sensitivity in language instruction.
What is the course modality?
The course is delievered online, blending self-paced content with interactive activities.
What is the program schedule?
The program is self-paced, allowing participants to progress at their own pace within each module, with set deadlines for assignments and module completions.
Certificate Delivery
What are the requirements/conditions for successful completion of the program?
Partcipants must complete all modules, submit assignments, actively engage in interactive activities, and achieve a passing score of at least 70%.
How will the certificate be delivered?
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive their certificate digitally via email within two weeks of completing the program. Hard copies can be requested for an additional fee.
Practicum
Is there a practicum component?
Yes! After successfully completing your coursework, you have the option of joining the TEFL Internship program. The internship must be completed within two semesters of completing the TEFL Certificate course.
FIU TEFL interns are required to support their mentor teachers in class and in person at least two days per week for a total of 20 hours. Additionally, interns must attend a mandatory weekly meeting with the TEFL program instructor.
