Arrive in Miami

Arrival at the Airport

Upon arrival you will be directed to Immigration for passport control. Present your passport, visa, I-20 Form, I-94 Form, and any other documents that the U.S. Embassy or Consulate advised you to bring.

After questioning you about your plans in the U.S., the Immigration officer will decide how long you will be permitted to stay. Then, the officer will take your picture and your finger prints. After this, the officer will stamp your I-20 form and give it back to you with your passport and the I-94 form.

Finally, you will go to the baggage carousel to pick up your bags and go through U.S. customs. You have finally made it. Welcome to the United States and Miami!

Getting to the University

Florida International University (F.I.U.) is approximately 8 miles from the airport. There are a number of taxi companies to bring you to the University. The fare (the amount of money you pay) from the airport to F.I.U. is about $40. You can tip the driver 15 % of your fare if you wish. There is also the Super Shuttle, which you can take from the airport to F.I.U. It makes several stops, but the fare is much cheaper than the taxi fare. You can also use apps like Uber or Lyft.

Do not accept a ride from strangers or get in unmarked cars or other vehicles.

If you want to make sure that the taxi or shuttle driver knows exactly where you want to go, print the following and hand it to him or her:
