FIU has developed an academic plan that is designed to provide in-person and remote classes. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in the Intensive English Program to begin or continue their studies. Modifications have been made to classrooms to include and maintain social distancing guidelines for everyone’s health and safety.
Intensive English Program
The Intensive English Program is an academic preparation course designed to help international students make the transition to American academic life in a relatively short time through full-time instruction in English as a second language.
The Intensive English Program prepares students for the TOEFL® examination. Students are tested prior to the first day of class. After that and based on their test results, each student is placed in one of six levels of study.
In each level, students receive grades for written examinations, oral presentations, class participation, and out-of-class work. Usually, after completing Level 6, our students are ready to pass the TOEFL® and enter American universities or professional schools.
Note: The Intensive English Program is an academic English program. Students will be exposed to and use Canvas for their class assignments and exams. To access Canvas, students will be expected to bring a personal device to class (iPad or laptop) by the end of the first week of classes. Please note that we do not recommend students use Chromebooks because certain learning softwares do not work on Chromebook devices.
